These last few days I had a problem with the screen of my Acer 5535 laptop.

It was very difficult to open or close the lid and there was a lot of cracking noise. I thought the screen hinge was broken but apparently it wasn’t.

The screen hinge is made of weak plastic. It seems that as time passes the plastic wears out and friction gets bigger and bigger.
In order to reduce this friction I just used some lubricating oil!!!  Just a drop of (mechanical) oil on each hinge is sufficient.  Be careful or you might cause a short-circuit :-D

After opening and closing the hinge a few times to make the oil get everywhere the lid now opens very easily without any cracking sound. I made some research on this matter and it seems that the previous series of Acer laptops were even worse regarding their screens.

A few notes of caution:

  • Never put anything on your keyboard. You may forget it there and then close the screen lid and break the LCD screen.
  • Never put anything on your laptop after you close the lid.
  • When you open or close the screen lid use a smooth gentle force and also try using both your hands. Using only one hand at the one side of the lid is the worst thing you can do because the force isn’t balanced and it might break that side of the hinge.
  • Never touch the screen. Only use special cleaning tissue to clean your screen.

I hope this prevents some broken laptop screens! What’s your opinion?
